Earthues dyes

Earthues dyes extracts - individual colours

Earthues dye extracts are suitable for use with both animal fibres and plant fibres and can be used on yarn, fabric, fleece, tops, felt, silk, mawata caps etc. Earthues dyes are suitable for use with all natural fibres but not man-made or synthetic yarns and fabrics. Earthues dye extracts give an excellent range of fully intermixeable shades and can be used for a wide variety of dyeing techniques, including rainbow dyeing, yarn painting, ikat and tie-dye. Please note that Earthues Indigo extract can not be used for rainbow dyeing and must be used following the normal methods for Indigo. If you have any questions about Indigo dyeing please contact us

Earthues dye extracts are very concentrated and a little goes a long way! For example, it takes 500g of logwood chips to dye one kilogram of wool, whereas only 25g of Earthues dye extract is needed to give an equivalent shade. Just 10g of Earthues cochineal extract will dye 1kg of wool to a good shade with enough dye left over in the dyebath for a paler second batch. Please bear this in mind when judging how much extract you may need.

For more in-depth information on hand-dyeing techniques with Earthues dyes we would recommend Michele Whipplinger's Natural Dye Instruction Booklet available from our Books section.

Please note that the colours shown are for guidance only. The colours obtained from a dye will vary with the strength of the dye solution, the mordant used and the type of yarn being dyed. Colour modifiers can also be used to change the shade achieved with the same dyestuff. If you are unsure of which dyes you will need to achieve a particular effect please contact us for further information and guidance.
